In two short weeks Monica and I, along with most of the best friends I have had in the last several years, will be flying to Barcelona to kick as much of Spain's ass as we can in a total of about an hour and forty five minutes' worth of playing time. I can't tell you how excited I am personally, and as a member of two of underground metal's most esoteric bands to be part of this year's Day of Doom Festival. We have a thousand things to do between now and then, and no doubt we will have a thousand things to do when we get to Barcelona, but this is one drummer who can't wait to take his seat onstage. This is a show that has been a very long time in the making, and it's really kind of a miracle that it's happening in the way that it is. Confessor have been trying to make the trip possible since 2012 but the scheduling never worked out. Turns out that having a singer who lives in China makes it difficult to play live. Who knew? Now both Confessor and Loincloth are going to perform. How freaking cool is that?!?!?! What an unbelievable opportunity!
Confessor and Loincloth have both been doubling up our practice schedules for the last month to be in the best shape possible for Day of Doom. Metal fans will not know what hit them by the time we are done. I'm almost salivating at the opportunity to knock people on their asses at the festival. There are a handful of people who are flying to Barcelona specifically to see us, and I feel as though we owe it to them and to anyone who may have wondered over the years what it would be like to see us live to show them precisely why we do what we do. The promoter has dreamt of being able to bring Confessor to Spain for years and I get pumped every time we speak on the phone. Our conversations are about whatever thing we may be trying to organize at the moment, but once those things are settled the tone changes to that of a longtime fan and a truly humbled musician expressing how much they are looking forward to meeting, and to the festival itself. Matei Tibacu, who has been one of The Poundry's most reliable commenters, and is the guy who put together a three hour radio program about me back in 2012 is coming to Spain with his mother to see us. It'll be neat to meet old friends for the first time.
Once the festival is over we will still have three full days in one of the neatest cities I have ever seen. We have a personal guide in the festival's organizer, who has been excited about showing us around since we very first spoke over two years ago. Monica and I never had an opportunity to take a honeymoon, so we are really looking forward to this exotic getaway even if it will be one that we share with great friends. Between Antoni Gaudi buildings, La Sagrada Familia and a day trip to Figueres to see the Salvador Dali Museum we will have plenty to see while we're there. Monica has never been bitten by the travel bug, so maybe this will stoke her fire for a trip together with a little less metal, beer and black tee shirts in the not too distant future. As long as we find a pot of gold at the end of the Day of Doom rainbow we should be able to afford another big trip.
I look forward to writing about our trip, the festival and all of our adventures when we get back. There are actually a few other things going on that have popped up all of a sudden that I can't wait to tell you all about once they have progressed a little more. Things are slowly but surely coming together in ways that could open some more doors for yours truly, and in ways that will hopefully shine a little more light on Confessor and Loincloth as well. Yes sir, things are pretty interesting around here these days. As long as I stay focused and keep putting one foot in front of the other I could find myself in a position to have some pretty interesting options coming my way. The first order of business however, is to kick everyone's ass at the Day of Doom Festival with Confessor on Friday the 10th of October, and then again the next night with Loincloth. For people who never thought they'd see either band, this will be a weekend to remember. I look forward to helping clean up all of the loose teeth and detached jawbones after the smoke clears. Watch out Barcelona! Ya'll are about to get Pounded by our own special brand of polyrhythmic punches and southeastern charm!
whoaaa!!! I'm so into the namedropping in this email! i wish every Steve Shelton fan could have such a birthday gift as to see the master play in both bands, two nights consecutively! Hopefully all will go even better than is planned!

Hey, Scrotei! It's good to see your name here again! I knew if I threw out the name of The Mighty Tibacu I'd get some bites. Hell, I'll ride anyone's coat tail to fame and fortune. You are headed for great fortune, right? Can't wait to meet you finally, and your mom, too! Any chance you could swing by Ireland and give Mr. and Mrs. McCoy a lift? Barcelona is gonna KICK, man! Well, I'm off to practice. It's my new home away from home. See ya' in a few days...
ReplyDeleteHeading to this from Ireland.I really can't wait to see Confessor live.Roll on Barcelona/Confessor/Beer/Metal.
DeleteHey there, "Anonynous"! Can't wait to bring it to you in a couple of days! Tap one of us on the shoulder at the club and say "Whussup?". We're relatively harmless.
DeleteHehe Thanks Steve! Unfortunately, the reality of not being able to go is starting to kick in : ( Sour times indeed! Never thought this opportunity would come along, and when it did, we couldn't take it. But I guess there's worse things in life than not getting to see your tech/doom/metal heroes...isn't there?? (As if you can put some sort of label on what Confessor and Loincloth do : )
ReplyDeleteAnyway, just want to say that I hope you, Monica and all the guys, have a great time. Can't wait to hear all about it here in The Poundry when you get back : )
For now I'll have to "Suffer" "Alone" while you "Prepare Yourself" for the weekend etc. etc. ; )
Talk soon...Keith, Laura and Molly
Sorry we won't see you guys there! With fingers crossed we'll be in your neck of the woods before long. There will be video from Spain online soon, no doubt. Look for images of us sweating our asses off and a crowd of people who look either stunned or totally confused. Hello to the family Keith, and I'll fill your eyeballs and brain hole with all sorts of details when we get back.
DeleteIn my hotel counting down the hour's to this show.Mr McCoy i feel your pain.If i ever meet you,ill buy some beer's and promise not to go on and on about Confessor/Lioncloth destroying Barcelona.

So I have been home four days since Barcelona.Ive got to say that im still walking around in a bit of a daze.
DeleteSince i heard Confessor would be playing a Euro show,Id planned that i would just stand back, watch the gig,and soak it all in.Well about 20 second's in,that plan flew straight out the window.I found myself headbanging like a crazy fool to every note.
Scott is an amazing frontman. The Bass and guitar tone was just punishing.Heavier then a battleship. As for your drumming Steve, you truely are the Jedi master of the drum world. That aint sticks you got in your hands. They are drum light sabre's.
I would like to sincerly thank you for coming to Europe and playing the showAlso thank you for taking the time for some photo's.For being so friendly and kind with your time.
People say you should never meet your hero's.They will only dissapoint.Well i say fxxk that.I met some of my hero's in Barcelona, and it was inspiring.
Steve thank you for the sticks and set list. The latter is in a frame and has pride of place on my living room wall.As for the sticks. They are in a top secret location, guarded 24 hours a day by my two fierce guard dog's.I will cherish them forever.
Hi to Monica. What a great lady,A kind, friendly beautiful person.Barcelona was so much more then a show.It was truely an inspiring time for me.Confessor and Lioncloth on the one bill cant be topped.I even dusted off my bass and started playing again.Somthing ive not done in a while.

David, it was such a pleasure to meet you and to be able to spend so much time talking to you. It means so much to me and to all of us in Confessor and Loincloth to meet people who have such a strong connection with our music. I hope I didn't hold you hostage so long that you missed more of the other bands than you wanted. My voice only came back a couple of days ago after having to shout to talk to you and Matei. Every time I get to meet someone who has hoped to see us for years I feel honored and humbled myself. I know what you mean. It's all about sharing and connecting. I'm so glad that we were able to share the experience together. I'm proud to have made it onto your wall! Chime in anytime, David! You are always welcome here... Monica says "Hello" and yes, flattery will get you everywhere.
DeleteI am beyond jealous David! Talk to you soon my friend : )
